The United Nation Agencies in Sri Lanka are keen and ready to support the Sri Lankan government's efforts to establish a culture of Disaster Risk Reduction, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Neil Buhne said. They have come forward to support by mobilizing technical assistance, human and financial resources and global knowledge.
Addressing the Second National Symposium on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute yesterday, the UN Head of the Mission said, Sri Lanka has taken a number of significant steps to improve its disaster resilience after the tsunami.
"Sri Lanka is in a position to revitalize its proven historical experience on preparedness such as the ancient irrigation culture and other cultural practices to minimize disaster impact including climate change.
Increased investments in disaster risk reduction and preparedness are more important today as Sri Lanka is aiming at a faster post-conflict growth in economic development", he said.
