Lanka’s largest saltern in Trincomalee

Construction is underway to build the largest saltern in the country in Kurumpity, Trincomalee.

The saltern is being established in a land with an extent of 1,800 acres. Upon completion it is expected to produce 50,000 metric tons of salt per year. Prior to 1977, Sri Lanka was almost self-sufficient in salt with salt produced in several salterns in the country, including Hambantota and Puttalam. However, the sale of these profitable salterns to the Private Sector, resulted in the country importing most of its salt requirement.

The project is carried out by the Government as a part of the large scale development work to improve infrastructure facilities and raise the standard of living of the people in the District who had suffered from terrorism for nearly three decades.

According to the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development, the project will generate 800 direct employments and over 1500 indirect employments. The project will also help reduce the present salt prices.
