Integrate uni students into society as a disciplined lot - President

President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that the university students are an intelligent section of society and they have to take over the country’s future. He stressed that there should be a viable program to integrate the university students into society as a disciplined lot.

The President made this statement when the University Vice Chancellors met him at Temple Trees on Monday (25).

He said that the talents and skills of university students should be used for the development of the country.

President Rajapaksa added that the Government has the responsibility of guiding the university students on the correct path and the university teachers, non academic staff and the parents should strive to redeem them from external forces and ensure that they achieved their educational targets.

He stressed that the era in which innocent university students are subjected to torture and violence should end. The President said that the university freshers should undergo a leadership development course before they enter the university. He was of the view that this type of course will instil the leadership qualities and positive attitudes in the minds of students.

The President opined that the representation of university students in sports activities are at low ebb when compared to university students in other countries and urged the authorities to increase the representation of university students in international sports competitions.

President Rajapaksa stressed the importance of forging more closer ties among the universities. He added that closer relation should exist with the university students and the people who are living in close proximity to the respective university.

The University Vice Chancellors stressed the importance of identifying the handful of students who are trying to cripple the entire university system of the country. They also called for a common mechanism to ensure that discipline is maintained in the university premises at all times.

They called for a viable mechanism to rehabilitate these students for the benefit of majority of students. They were of the view that this type of action would ensure development of university education. The President was informed that the students are engaged in violent activities due to the pressure of a handful of students. They opined that these students should be identified.

The meeting focused on how a mechanism should be evolved to educate the parents of students who indulge in unlawful activities in the university premises and outside. It was understood that the law of the land should apply to the university students too.
