Tamil lessons to govt officers

 

Steps have been taken to teach both Sinhala and Tamil languages to government officers under a special project of the National Language Training Institute as part of the government efforts to promote the use of Tamil language in the public service.

Currently 223 Tamil language classes are being held in seven Provinces island wide for Sinhalese government officers. These are conducted in the Provinces of North Western, Sabaragamuwa, North Central, Central, Southern, Uva and Western with the participation of 6615 government officers.

Another 44 classes are being carried out in the Northern and Eastern Provinces to teach Sinhala language to the Tamil government officers and 1718 officers are attending these classes.

The articles 18 and 19 – Chapter IV of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (1978) recognizes Sinhala and Tamil as national languages and English as the link language.
