Task force to prevent Drug smuggling

A Task Force has formed consisting representatives from the Security Forces, Navy and the Fisheries Ministry officials, in the efforts to eradicate drugs and narcotic usage in the country.

This task force which has been established in coordination with the Ministry of Defense is stationed at all fishery harbors and is empowered to scrutinize all incoming vessels.

The Unit has also been tasked with the function of preventing usage of banned fishing gear for fishing purposes, which had been a main complaint against Sri Lanka by the International Tuna Commission.

It has been found that the drugs and narcotic dealers use fishing vessels to bring drugs and narcotics into the country, and then distribute it to various parts of the island through an organized network. It has also been found that drugs and narcotics reach inland through the fishery harbors dotted along the coast throughout the country.
