Security check points removed

Security check points in the city are to be gradually removed and replaced with an advanced surveillance system with the improved security situation.

Military Spokesman Major General Ubaya Medawala told news.lk that since the security situation in Colombo has improved, the government has decided to remove all check points in the city.

“Two check points at Wellawatta and Bambalapitiya have already been removed and it will be replaced by snap road blocks and constant alternative surveillance system,” confirmed Major General Ubaya Medawala.

He further said that there are around ten permanent security check points within the Colombo metropolitan area and all these will be gradually removed.

These security check points were set up due to threats of LTTE suicide attacks in the past. Therefore, security personnel carried out round the clock checking on vehicles and persons coming into the city. Major General added that these security points brought favourable results.
