Lanka's overall financial system in good shape – CB Governor

Overall, our country's financial system is in very good shape and no stakeholder should get discouraged by those who are attempting to discredit our robust and fast growing economy, Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal said.

"The track record of this Government and the Central Bank over the past five years in protecting banks and Registered Financial Companies (RFCs) is by far the best seen in the history," he said in an interview with the Daily News Business.

"We have not allowed a single bank or a registered finance company to crash even during the world's worst financial crisis.

The people who are trying to mislead the public today by creating alarmist stories are the very same people who allowed many financial institutions to crash under their watch," he said.

"For the first time in our history, a deposit insurance scheme where deposits upto Rs 200,000 are to be guaranteed, has been introduced.

That too, is another very significant intervention which instills confidence in our financial market," he said.

Cabraal said in recent advertisements, the Central Bank has rightly advised people to examine the risk before they invest.

The reason why there is a difference between the interest rates of Treasury Bills and Bonds where the deposit is guaranteed by the Government and those of other deposits is that there is a risk premium attached to such deposits.

"That is the way all financial markets work. It is because of this that we have advised investors to be mindful of the investments they make. There is nothing wrong with that," he said.
