President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed an organizing committee on Tuesday (26) to bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. President directed the committee comprising Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal, Namal Rajapaksa MP, Deputy Minister Dilan Perera, sports officials, leading sports personalities and members of stakeholder Ministries and Departments to highlight a green concept to promote Sri Lanka as the most suitable contender for the event.
Gold Coast, Queensland of Australia, and Hambantota of Sri Lanka are the confirmed bids for the Commonwealth Games 2018.
The deadline for submission of formal bid to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) is May 11, 2011. The winning bid will be announced in Basseterre, St Kitts on November 11, 2011.
