President participates EXPO 2010 closing

 

President Mahinda Rajapaksa participated the closing ceremony of EXPO 2010 exhibition as a guest of the Chinese Government yesterday (31).

The Exhibition was held for 6 months in Shanghai, China. The first of its kind was held in the United Kingdom to showcase new innovations with the Industrial Revolution. Later, it was held in various countries with the intention to discuss many aspects of development.

President Rajapaksa also participated the EXPO 2010 conference which was held alongside the EXPO 2010 Exhibition in Shanghai.

The theme of Expo 2010 is "Better City, Better Life," representing the common wish for a better living in future urban environments. This theme represents concerns of the international community in future policy making, urban strategies and sustainable development.

In 1800, 2% of the global population lived in cities. In 1950, the figure raised to 29%, in 2000, almost half the world population moved into cities, and by 2010, as estimated by the United Nations, the urban population will account for 55% of the total human population.

State leaders and representatives from over 20 countries including Nepal, Finland, Bahamas, Hungary, Lesotho and East Timor participated in the event. Secretary General of the UN, Ban ki Moon also attended.
