Water supply project to North

 

A Water Supply and Sanitation Project by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board commenced recently in Jaffna and Kilinochchi to cease the water problem in the North both for drinking and cultivation purposes.

In addition, discussions are underway with the Asian Development Bank for commencement of the proposed Iranamadu Reservoir Project at a cost of Rs.220 billion to be completed in a period of 3 years, said Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Douglas Devananda.

Minister of Water Supply and Drainage Dinesh Gunawardene said that the water problem of the people in the North would be a thing of the past in a period of 3 years after completion of the Iranamadu Reservoir Project. He emphasized the importance of rain water harvesting through which a large quantity of water could be saved and utilized for various purposes. He added that a special programme in this regard would be launched in Jaffna in the future.

He also said that a sum of Rs.315 million has been set aside for projects intended to solve the water problem of the people in North.
