India assisting SL in resettlement - Sonia Gandhi

The government of India is taking up the issue of resettlement and rehabilitation of displaced persons in Sri Lanka as well as the de-mining and reconstruction process with the Government of Sri Lanka at the appropriate level so that they may be able to move out of the camps at the earliest,” Indian Congress President and Chairperson of the National Advisory Council, Sonia Gandhi told Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

In her reply to Karunanidhi's letter she stated, “Our government is extending whatever humanitarian and resettlement assistance is possible to alleviate their hardship and help restore normality”, the Hindu reported.

The authorities in charge of Sri Lanka's northern IDPs closed the Zone-4 area of the Menik Farm relief village in Vavuniya yesterday (9 Nov) with the resettlement of IDPs sheltered there.

Accordingly, six hundred IDPs who were sheltered at Zone-4 were resettled in Mamule which reduces the total number of IDPs in Vavuniya to 16, 025.
