The Government is taking all necessary measures to support those affected by floods caused by the heavy rains since last evening, said the Disaster Management Centre (DMC). Currently, the DMC has deployed boats to assist flood victims and is coordinating with local government authorities, security forces and NGOs to support flood victims.
Flood relief teams of the Sri Lanka Navy have also been deployed in Colombo to assist people affected by the flood.
Sri Lanka Airforce Bell 212 helicopters are deployed today (Nov.11) in Colombo-Kandy road, Panadura, and Kalutara areas to conduct disaster assessment and rescue missions.
According to the Disaster Management Minister A.H.M. Fowzie Rs. 10 million for Colombo and Rs. 5 million for Gampaha and Kaluthara have been allocated to provide relief for flood victims.
As a precautionary measure, the Ceylon Electricity Board has halted the supply of electricity to several areas in Colombo due to the flooding of CEB Sub Stations. Police today requested motorists to stay away from flooded roads to avoid congestion and to use public transport into Colombo.
Colombo recorded 400mm of rainfall by 7am today, the highest rainfall in 18 years, the Meteorological Department said.
