Rehabilitated ex-LTTE cadres reintegrated soon

 

Nearly 6200 ex-LTTE cadres are undergoing rehabilitation and the government is planning to reintegrate them into civilian life very soon, Minister of Rehabilitation DEW Gunasekera said.

Sri Lanka has so far reintegrated nearly 5500 ex-LTTE cadres to the civil society after rehabilitation. The Minister said the remaining will be released in batches.

According to the Minister, these cadres are given various types of training including school education.

He said among those undergoing rehabilitation includes persons who were involved in activities such as driving LTTE vehicles.

“Cooks are also among them” added the Minister.

The group mainly consists members who have been in the battle field.

The Minister said that nearly 70% of the ex-LTTE cadres who are being rehabilitated have never studied beyond the 8th grade.

He said these cadres are now been taught school subjects and some of them sat for the Ordinary Level exams recently.

Nearly 1000 cadres have sat for both the Ordinary and Advanced level examinations.

According to Minister Gunasekera, 10% of the ex-LTTE cadres who are undergoing rehabilitation have never gone to a school and has become members of the LTTE child soldier brigade.
