Many investment incentives from Budget – Minister Rajapaksa

Many incentives for local and foreign investments in Sri Lanka are included in 2011 Budget proposals tabled in Parliament by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, said Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa when a delegation of Belgian investors met him at his Ministry Monday.

The delegation included 50 representatives from 40 Belgium Companies involved in construction, fisheries, agriculture, gem, information technology, water supply, textile and tourism industries.

Minister Rajapaksa revealed that many Belgian investors stayed back in Sri Lanka at the height of the conflict when investors from certain other countries abandoned Sri Lanka and said he was thankful to the Belgian investors for expressing such solidarity with Sri Lanka.

He said an investor friendly climate existed in all parts of the country today as the 30 year conflict was a thing of the past and there was a stable Government in the country. There was also a well educated and skilled labour force in Sri Lanka which enabled investors to conduct their ventures with proper employee-employer relationship.

The mega development projects such as the Magampura port, Mattala new Airport and modern Expressways would immensely benefit prospective investors, he said.

He said the new Budget had introduced investor friendly tax relief measures and banking facilities he would invite more and more investors to take the opportunity and start new ventures in the country.

Ambassador for Belgium John Debo and Sri Lanka Ambassador in Belgium Ravinatha Ariyasinghe were also present at the discussion.
