The two prized possessions of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA), a blue star sapphire and a cat's eye, will go on display at the 'Jewels Sri Lanka 2010' gem and jewellery exhibition. President Mahinda Rajapaksa will open the three-day exhibition and trade show that runs from 10th to 12th December from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The blue star sapphire, found from the Matale district in 1973, is known as the 'Star of Lanka' weighing 392.92 carats. It has a rich deep blue hue and a well defined six-rayed star.
The cat's eye is called the 'Chrysoberyl' weighing 103 carats mined from Nawalapitiya in 1974.
Both these gems could be viewed at the Jewels Sri Lanka 2010 gem and jewellery exhibition beginning December 10 and it will be a very rare opportunity, said Ajith Perera, Acting Director General of the Gem and Jewellery Authority.
According to NGJA these two rare gems had been exhibited only on three occasions during the last 37 years.
