Cabinet approvals 

 

The Cabinet Spokesman and the Minister of Mass Media and Information Keheliya Rambukwella announced the following decisions taken at the Cabinet Meeting held on 15 December.

Climate Change Secretariat for Operation of Adaptation Fund

The Cabinet of Ministers granted approval to nominate Climate Change Secretariat of the Ministry of Environment as the national implementing entity to the Adaptation Fund, established under the Kyoto Protocol.

Under the Adaptation Fund, developing countries could obtain financial assistance for programmes and projects relating to climate change.

United Nations Framework; Convention for Climate Change and its Kyoto Protocol are the main international instruments which the global community has collectively adopted to address climate change related issues.

Procurement process for Colombo Outer Circular Highway Project

Approval was granted to revive the procurement process pertaining to Kaduwela - Kadawatha section of the Colombo Outer Circular Highway project, with the bidder M/s Taisai Corporation of Japan.

The Colombo Outer Circular Highway project from Kottawa, traverses through Maharagama, Kaduwela, Biyagarna, Mahara and Wattala Divisional Secretariat areas and ends up at Kerawalapitlya. This is under implementation with Japanese financial assistance.

This road which is 29.1 km in length will connect the Colombo-Katunayake, Colombo-Kandy and the Southern Expressways.


Sea Passenger transport between Sri Lanka and India

The Cabinet approved to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Sri Lanka and India to start sea passenger services between the two countries.

As per the agreed minutes of the MoU, the sea passenger service will be initially established between Colombo and Tuticorin (Thuthukudi); and Thalaimannar and Rameshwaram.

Later it will be expanded to other ports of the two countries with mutual consent.
