Agriculture grows by 6.2%, 2010 |

The “Agriculture, forestry, and fishing” sector has shown a 6.2 percent growth during the Q3 of 2010 as against the growth of (-) 0.5 percent during the same quarter previous year.
Accordingly, the growth rate of tea production is registered as 2.0 percent for the Q3 2010 as against (-) 2.1 percent for the Q3 2009, attributed to recovery driven by the favorable weather conditions, and increased demand along with the satisfactory prices in global market.
The value added rubber production grew by 15.9 percent for this quarter as against the (-) 3.4 percent the same quarter of the last year. The major reasons for this growth was due to the increase in average price of Rubber (at Colombo auction) which rose to Rs.404.97 per Kg in Q3 2010 from 203.93 per Kg in Q3 2009 indicating 98.6 percent price increase.
The value addition of coconut production showed a 22.1 percent decrease in this quarter although it grew by 2.1 percent in the same quarter previous year. Low rainfall in 2009, reduction of utilization of fertilizer during the last couple of years and low humidity in major coconut cultivating areas were identified as root cause to such a decline.
The growth rate of miner export crops (MEC) was recorded as (-) 1.5percent during the Q3 2010 whereas it was (-) 0.5 percent for the same quarter previous year.
The paddy grew by 31.7 percent for the Q3 2010 as against the negative growth rate of 27.6 percent in Q3 2009. The gross extent sown and gross extent harvested increased by 20.5 percent, and 21.4 percent respectively in Yala season 2010 over the Yala season of 2009. The average yield per acre is recorded 87.6 bushels.
The sub sector of livestock production grew by 0.6 percent for the Q3 2010. The milk production increased to 65.9 million Liters in Q3 2010 from 58.3 million Liters in Q3 the year before. The restored peace across the country supported the growth of livestock farming, especially in the East, the North Central province and Monaragala district which were badly exposed to the unrest for years. Milk production increasing programs that were launched a couple of years ago, also supported this positive growth.
The sub sector of highland crops for the Q3 2010 grew by 5.4 percent. Among the major crops, the Maize, Red onion, and Green chilies grew by 120.5 percent, 6.1 and 30.3 percent respectively. Soya beans and Gingelly has increased by 96.5 percent and 115.3 percent respectively.
The sub sector of vegetables production grew by 7.2 percent in the Q3 2010. Vegetable production which declined due to drought whether condition in 2009 was recovered thereby, pushing up the growth.
The overall fishing industry grew by 14.4 percent in Q3 2010. Of these “Inland fishing” grew by 9.7 percent and “Marine fishing” grew by 15.3 percent. The satisfactory growth of Marine fishing industry has been supported by the relaxation of restricted fishing time and areas in Northern region, higher fish production of offshore, and development of fishing industry related infrastructure facilities.
