Fertilizer Subsidy to boost coconut
cultivation |

The government has taken action to provide fertilizer subsidies to all coconut growers with the aim of boosting coconut cultivation.
Accordingly a 50 kg bag of urea and Potash fertilizer will be given at a subsidized price of Rs.1000.00.
The average annual coconut production in the year 2010 is approximately 2750 million nuts and it is targeted to increase the produce to exceed 3000 million.
This direct subsidy scheme which is expected to cost Rs.2280 million annually, will be implemented through 160 Coconut Development officer, 9600 Agricultural research and Production assistants and 25000 Samurdi Officers under the coordination of National Fertilizer Secretariat.
Menawhile, Cabinet has also approved a proposal by minister of Agrarian Services and Wildlife Mr. S.M. Chandrasena to expand the fertilizer subsidy and to promote the usage of Organic Fertilizer among the farmers.
Accordingly, as a pilot project 25 organic fertilizer production units will be set up in all 25 districts in the country.
At present a 50 kg bag of fertilizer is given for Rs.350.00 for paddy cultivation and this amount is nearly 10 percent of the market price and the government spends Rs.30, 000mn for this subsidy.
With the promotion of organic fertilizer the government expects to reduce the use of chemical fertilizer by 15% in the first stage with the ultimate goal of reducing the use of chemical fertilizer up to 25 percent.
