LG polls in CWC venues postponed

The government yesterday decided to postpone elections in the Local Government Institutions where the 2011 Cricket World Cup is set to be held.

Accordingly, Local Government elections in Colombo, Pallekele and Hambantota will be held on a later date.

The extended term of the Local Government Institutions is expected to come to an end on Thursday.

The Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils will issue a special gazette notification in terms of the powers vested in him to bring the terms of 330 Municipal Councils, Town Councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas to an end enabling the Commissioner of Elections to call for fresh nationwide elections in local government institutions.

This will be the first time since 1981 when local government elections are being held in the entire country including the North and East.
