LTTE remnants were running illegal operations overseas, using ships that escaped the conflict, Minister of Water Supply & Drainage Dinesh Gunawardena said.
The remaining eight LTTE boats out of the 20 which the LTTE were reported to have possessed back in 2002 are being used by international LTTE bodies to perform illegal activities, he said in Parliament yesterday.
Responding to a question raised by UNP MP Gamini Jayawickrema Perera, Minister Gunawardena stated that 11 out of the 20 LTTE boats had been destroyed by the armed forces while the largest of the boats was brought to the Colombo harbour in December 2009.
The ships are registered under different names of international orgnisations and are being used for illegal activities such as human smuggling, the minister said.
A ship named Eeshswari, which was used to smuggle some Sri Lankans to Canada recently, is one of them, can be stated as an example, he said.
The Minister told the parliament that intelligence authorities are taking necessary measures to recover the remaining ships.
