Cabinet approvals


The Cabinet Spokesman and the Minister of Mass Media and Information Keheliya Rambukwella announced the following decisions taken at the Cabinet Meeting held on 12 January.

Govt bids for proposed Commonwealth Games - 2018 at Hambantota

On a proposal by the Minister of Sports, Mr. Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Cabinet granted approval to proceed with the initial measures taken to bid for the proposed Commonwealth Games -2018.

An organizing committee co-chaired by the Minister of Sports and Governor CBSL Mr. Ajith Niward Cabraal, has been appointed

Hambantota and Nuwara Eliya District Hospitals to be developed

The Government of the Netherlands has pledged concessionary financial assistance through the Rabo Bank International of the Netherlands for identified projects in the country.

Under this financial assistance Hambantota and Nuwara Eliya districts General Hospitals will be developed.

Cabinet on a proposal made by the Minister of Health, Mr. Maithripala Sirisena, granted approval to award the contract to a construction company in the Netherlands for a total cost of Euro 86.49 million.

Three MoUs to be signed with Libya

On a proposal made by the Minister of External Affairs, Prof G.L. Peiris, approval was granted to sign three Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) between Sri Lanka and Libya to provide assistance for infrastructure development in the North East, development of highways, communication and tourism.

CATIC Grant Skyline Hotel and Rainbow Multifunctional Complex in Colombo

China National Aero Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC) intends to purchase land around Galle Face Green area, to build a multifunctional complex comprising a five star hotel and a shopping mall with direct investment of nearly US $500 million.

On a proposal made by the Minister of Economic Development, Mr. Basil Rajapaksa, cabinet approved this project proposal to be proceeded on the basis of agreement concluded with the earlier investor Shangri-La Hotels Lanka (Pvt) Ltd.

The planned development in this area has already attracted another investment of around US $500 million from Shangri-La Hotels Lanka (Pvt) Ltd., which proposes to build a 500 room hotel. Residencies and shopping complex to be completed by 2013.The total foreign investment on these two projects will be around US Dollar 1000 million.

This will assist developing Colombo as a Middle Income Commercial City and also to accommodate nearly 2.5 million tourists expected by 2016.

Cabinet discusses about recent floods

The Cabinet of Ministers discussed in detail the recent floods which affected many parts of the island, said the Cabinet Spokesman and the Minister of Mass Media and Information Keheliya Rambukwella.

The Minister of Disaster Management, Mr Mahinda Amaraweera, briefed the Cabinet on the immediate measures taken to provide relief to the victim.

On the instruction of President all necessary steps have already been taken to provide immediate needs of the affected people continuously, he said.

President informed that necessary funds will be released from the General Treasury to re-construct and renovate infrastructure facilities such as irrigation tanks, reservoirs, roadways and all other facilities.
