Govt, TNA discuss reconciliation


Representatives of the Government of Sri Lanka met with representatives of the Tamil National Alliance at Temple Trees to initiate a structured discussion directed towards reconciliation through a political settlement and to address the urgent humanitarian and reconstruction concerns in the North and East.

Jaffna District TNA Parliamentarian Suresh Premachandran told The Island that the talks were held in a friendly and cordial atmosphere. He said that this was as the first such meeting between the government and TNA on urgent issues and that the next discussion is scheduled for January 24, also at Temple Trees. He said that they (TNA) "hoped for the better".

The participants agreed to continue the dialogue with a sense of commitment to identify the issues and to work towards solutions in a methodical way.

Senior Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake and Ministers Nimal Siripala de Silva and G. L. Peiris participated on behalf of the Government.

MPs Maavai Senathirajah, Suresh Premachandran and M. A. Sumanthiran participated on behalf of the Tamil National Alliance. MP Sajin de Vass Gunawardena, Coordinating Secretary to the President, is Secretary to this Committee.
