SL, DR establish diplomatic relations

The Memorandum of Understanding establishing diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Dominican Republic was signed at the High Commission of Sri Lanka in New Delhi.

The MoU was signed by Carlos Morales Troncoso, Minister of External Affairs of the Dominican Republic who is in India on an official visit, and High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in India, Prasad Kariyawasam.

Sri Lanka and Dominican Republic will shortly designate concurrent Ambassadors to represent the two countries, the Sri Lankan High Commission in New Delhi said.

Despite the absence of formal diplomatic relations, there have been people to people and trade contacts between the two countries in the past. With the formalization of diplomatic ties, already existing relations between Sri Lanka and Dominican are expected to enhance for the mutual benefit of the two peoples.

High Commissioner Kariyawasam briefed the Minister about developments in Sri Lanka and explained the developmental projects and trade and investment potential of Sri Lanka.

Minister Troncoso, praising the skills of Sri Lankan employees said that already more than 200 professionals from Sri Lanka are employed in the fields of chartered accountancy, hotel industry and organic agricultural industry in his country.

Minister Troncoso and High Commissioner Kariyawasam expressed confidence that the bilateral economic cooperation would increase as a result of establishing formal diplomatic relations.
