A project has been initiated by the Ministry of National Heritage to preserve historical sites in the North and East which have been isolated for the past few decades due to terrorist threats.
Excavations are carried out in several locations in the areas by the archeological department, which is under the National and Heritage Ministry.
Accordingly, Gokanna and Mathota; the ancient ports which used to be the commercial center in ancient Sri Lanka for China and Rome will be preserved. Also, Kadurugoda temple and the precinct , the temple ground and ruins of the Anuradhapura era, areas of Thiriyaya and Kachchaveli, Koneshvaran Kovil in Delft Island will be preserved.
A team including the Minister of National Heritage Dr. Jagath Balasuriya, Chief Secretary of the Netherlands High Commission in Sri Lanka Mr. Jacob Beerendse and the Director General of the Archeological Department Dr. Senerath Dissanayake recently paid an inspection visit to the preservation areas.
The Minister appreciated the Tamil community in Jaffna over their assistance for the preservation programme.
