The Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) will end public sittings following its field visits scheduled for February 18 and 19. February 18 meeting will take place in Matara while the 19th meeting will take place in Galle.
These two meetings were open to the public and the public were allowed to give both oral and written evidence, LLRC media consultant Lakshman Wickramasinghe said. The Commission requires time to anylize evidences gathered from the public during past several months before handing over its final report to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, he said.
According to Wickremasinghe, the Commission will hold pocket meetings or summon relevant parties as and when needed for more clarification when preparing the final report.
“Otherwise, we will not have anymore public hearing,” he said. The Commission will hand over its final report to the President in May. The Commission had to cancel its field visits to Ampara due to prevailing bad weather conditions.
The LLRC held its first sittings on August 11, 2010. In November 2010, the President extended its mandate till May 15, 2011.
