Sri Lanka won the first “Group A” match against Canada by 210 runs at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, Sooriyaveva yesterday (20).
Sri Lanka scored 332 runs in their 50 over for the loss of 7 wickets while Canada was bowled out for 122 runs in the 36.5 overs.
Mahela Jayawardena scored the first hundred at the 2011 World Cup. This was the fastest hundred scored by a Sri Lankan at a World Cup which was a record set earlier by Sanath Jayasuriya. Mahela achieved the century in 80 balls and was named the man of the match.
Meanwhile, the New Zealand team beat Kenya by 10-wickets in their opening match at the Cricket World Cup in Chennai yesterday.
New Zealand dismissed Kenya for 69 in 23.5 overs.
Australia will play against Zimbabwe in India today (21).
