The Ministry of Power and Energy has launched a project to produce re-generating power from garbage as an alternative to meet the electricity needs of the country.
A system is introduced to produce energy by recycling garbage from Colombo and suburb areas, under the project ‘Jaivaskanda’ carried out by the Ministry.
Three programmes under this project have already been implemented and they will add 12 MW to the national grid.
Also, eight programmes are underway with the target to generate 34MW, while another 38 programmes are expected to be implemented to add 259 MW to the national grid in the future.
The aim of this project is to contribute in supplying energy to the country with alternative sources by 2015.
This will also be a timely solution for the garbage problem in Colombo and suburbs.
