President Mahinda Rajapaksa will officially release subsidized fertilizer to open market on March 03.
Following massive damage to crops by the devastating rains and floods last month in many parts of the country, the President had ordered to extend the fertilizer subsidy given to coconut growers, to all vegetable and fruit growers as well.
Accordingly, a 50-kg bag of fertilizer which costs Rs. 3,800 will be sold at Rs. 1,000 per bag.
The government in December decided to sell a 50-kg bag of urea and potash fertilizer to all the coconut growers at a subsidized price of Rs 1000.00 to increase the coconut production, following the severe shortage of coconuts the country experienced.
Following the recent floods that submerged crops and paddy fields in the Northern, North Central, Central, and Eastern provinces, the President has instructed the authorities to introduce a subsidy scheme for farmers to purchase the subsidized fertilizer in the open market without any hassle to obtain it.
