More ex- LTTE cadres reintegrated

Another batch of hundred and six ex- LTTE combatants was reintegrated into civilian life yesterday (2) to mark the Maha Shivarathri Hindu festival.

The batch, comprising 104 men and two women, was reunited with their relatives.

According to the Commissioner General of Rehabilitation Brigadier Sudantha Ranasinghe, only 4500 out of the over 11,000 taken for rehabilitation with the end of the conflict are left in rehabilitation centres.

In a ceremony yesterday, Brig Ranasinghe handed over diploma certificates to another batch of 26 female ex-LTTE cadres after they successfully completed a diploma in teaching.

Only nine rehabilitation centres remain at present out of the initial 24. Brig Ranasinghe said that 211 ex-child soldiers out of 361 who had sat the GCE (O/L) examination last year qualified to sit the GCE (A/L).

Following recommendations by the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC), President Mahinda Rajapaksa in January this year appointed a four-member committee to study and recommend suitable action to expedite the cases of detained LTTE suspects.

This special committee began its work by visiting the Boossa detention camp and interviewed 182 detainees on Jan 19.

The committee is headed by Deputy Solicitor General Shavindra Fernando and includes Senior State Counsel P. Kumararatnam, Chethiya Goonesekera and Dinal Ratnayake.
