New warehouse complex at Colombo Port

The Ports Authority has commenced work to build a warehouse complex for export containers north of the habour which aims to reduce congestion and provide more space for its main transhipment business.

Upon construction, yard container reception and delivery will be undertaken through this and boxes will not be allowed inside the port.

All export boxes will be received at this yard and after that it will be diverted to the port terminals via a rail link. The Railway Department is carrying out the tracing work and improving the soil conditions in this regard.

After completion of the rail link the Ports Authority will construct warehouses at the facility. Most of the activities now being carried out inside the port such as warehousing, cargo consolidation and vehicle parking will be shifted to the new cargo village.

Container volumes at Colombo Port are reported to be growing rapidly and the port is nearing its maximum capacity levels.
