Lankans continue to return from Libya

Fifty five more Sri Lankans who have been evacuated to Cyprus and Malta from Libya will return home today.

According to the Foreign Employment Bureau (SLBFE) sources, 33 persons have been evacuated to Cyprus while 22 have been sent to Malta.

Arrangements have been made to bring back another 83 Sri Lankans, 54 from Malta and 29 from Cyprus, SLBFE said.

The government is continuing with the evacuation of Sri Lankans from Libya and it has taken measures to ensure the repatriation of over 500 Sri Lankans stranded in Tripoli, Benghazi, and Sirt within this week.

The Ministry of External Affairs is coordinating with Sri Lankan embassies in Libya and Egypt, and the SLBFE in order to ensure the safety, security, and welfare of Sri Lankan expatriates in Libya.

The SLBFE has appointed a committee to coordinate the evacuation round the clock with the External Affairs Ministry.

Foreign workers in Libya continue to flee to neighboring countries as protests against the Libyan Leader Colonel Muammar Al-Gaddafi and the crackdown on protesters continue in several cities throughout Libya.
