Russia assists ‘Jana Sevana’

 

The Ministry of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing & Common Amenities, will implement a low cost housing project under the ‘Jana Sevana’ programme with financial assistance from the Russian government.

Representatives of MSK Engineering institute, a leading construction company in Russia, met President Mahinda Rajapaksa today (4) at Temple Trees to discuss the project.

2512 houses for commercial purposes and another 1000 houses to be granted to the people, will be included in the project, Minister Wimal Weerawansa said.

Persons employed in foreign countries will be given priority in the acquisition of houses built for commercial purpose while persons who pay through their NRFC accounts will receive various other benefits. Thus, through this, it is expected to gain foreign remittance.

Construction costs and time for this project is very low compared to other housing projects. The country will also benefit from modern technology through this project. With the granting of 1000 houses to 1000 families free of charge, 16 acres of land will be freed elsewhere in the Colombo district for commercial purposes.

With the establishment of a building manufacturing plant at the end of the 1st phase of the project, Sri Lanka will acquire latest technology to implement similar projects in future.
