SL records world's highest tourism growth

Sri Lanka has recorded the world's highest growth in the tourism sector, as it has become one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the world, stated Deputy Minister of Economic Development Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena at a press briefing in Colombo recently.

The number of tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka in January, 2011 was 46%, and it was the world's highest increase. USA and Japan have been ranked in the second and third places respectively.

Tourist arrivals to the country increased sharply with the elimination of terrorism. Sri Lanka gained international recognition as a peaceful country, the Deputy Minister said.

North and East of the country has the world's most beautiful beaches, he added.

The Government is committed to carry out all that is necessary to develop the tourism industry, Minister Abeywardena stated.
