Japan aids resettled IDPs

 

The government of Japan has granted over 60 million rupees to improve the livelihoods of the Internally Displaced Persons resettled in the Trincomalee district of the Eastern Province.

The US$551,547 (approximately Rs.61.2 million) grant provided under the Japan-NGO Cooperation Grant scheme will be utilized for the livelihood project to be implemented by the Japanese NGO, Peace Winds Japan (PWJ).

The funds will help rehabilitate six irrigation systems, provide trainings to agricultural and dairy farmers, and improve a public milk factory. Around 1,047 families directly in the district will benefit from the project.

Kaoru Shimazaki, Charge d'Affaires of the Japanese Embassy and Ms. Yukari Nishino, Head of Sri Lanka Office of PWJ signed the grant contract Thursday (03) at the Embassy premises in Colombo.

Announcing the grant, the Japanese Embassy in Colombo said the project aims at improving livelihoods of the resettled communities in Gomarankadawela, Muttur, and Eachchilampattai Divisional Secretary divisions in the Trincomalee district.

PWJ has been implementing a number of emergency and livelihood projects in the North and East through Japan Platform (JPF).
