US assistance for IDPs

The United States through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has donated US$ 4.2 million (approximately 462 million Rupees) worth food aid to internally displaced persons (IDPs) to support their resettlement in the North.

The U.S. Embassy in Colombo Wednesday said the consignment is the USAID's second shipment of food aid this year.

The United Nations World Food Programme will distribute this aid consisting wheat flour, lentils and vegetable oil to meet the needs of up to 371,000 returnees.

This donation is in addition to the flood relief assistance of US$ 2.9 million (319 million Rupees) given by the United States Government earlier this year to support families in areas severely affected by the heavy rains in North Central and Eastern provinces.

According to the Embassy, to date, the U.S. has provided nearly $33 million (3.6 billion rupees) in food aid to Sri Lankan during 2010 and the first months of 2011.
