Peliyagoda fish market open soon

The multi-storied Peliyagoda Fish Market complex will be declared open on the 26th of this month. This two-storied complex has stalls for selling fish on wholesale and separate stalls for selling fishing on retail.

The ground floor has 128 retail stalls and 148 wholesale outlets. The upper floor has a restaurant, bank branches, shopping outlets, a post office, police post and a quality control unit.

The complex also has three flake ice production units capable of producing 25 – 50 tons of flake ice per day. It also has three cold rooms with variable temperate at each cold room and a waste purification unit.

The complex has been constructed in a land extent of 3.17 hectares.

The car park for the complex can accommodate 500 vehicles at a time, with carpeted internal access roads.

The new Complex was built to shift the present St. John Fish Market to the new building as the St. John Fish lack many facilities. The Fisheries Corporation will administer the new Complex and the Corporation will also ensure that the consumer is not cheated and fish is sold at this market at reasonable and affordable prices.

Consumers visiting the market could carry out their purchases without any congestion due to adequate space available in the market. Construction of the complex started in 2007.

This new fish market was completed at a cost of Rs.1, 700 million, and the Asian Development Bank has financed 50% of the cost.
