The Sri Lanka Animal Husbandry and Livestock Resources Development Unit is carrying out several programmes to enhance milk production in several areas coming under the Mahaweli Authority in addition to the schemes being implemented by the Livestock Development Ministry.

Two thousand acres of grass land have been reserved in Maurapura area by the Mahaweli Authority for traditional dairy farmers. Each farmer is being provided with an area of five acres and other necessary facilities.

Accordingly, 12 warm liquid milk centres have been set up. Around 600 farmer families in Chandrikawewa, Muravesihena, Kiri-ibbanwewa and Sooriyawewa are engaged in dairy farming.
