Special medical units for athletes

The government has commenced a programme to establish twenty five sports medical units throughout the country at district level for the benefit of sportsmen and sportswomen.

Accordingly the Minister of Health Sirisena Herath, on a request made by Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage, has approved to set up 25 medical units in main hospitals in each district, effective from May 01.

This programme will be initiated as a solution for the lack of modern medical facilities and specialized physicians for athletes.

The decision to establish medical units at district level was taken at special discussions held between the two ministers to facilitate the sportsmen and sportswomen who bring international fame to the country, with efficient medical treatment during accidents and other ailments.

These units will provide facilities to use CT Scans, MRI Scans and other modern medical facilities.

This will also encourage sportsmen and sportswomen to refrain from using banned substances and performance enhancing drugs, as they will be provided with necessary guidance and special treatment from doctors who specialize in the relevant fields.
