The government has taken action to reconstruct 2000 tanks including 100 tanks in National Parks and sanctuaries, under a project to be carried out by the Agrarian Services and Wildlife.
Tanks in the Wilpattu, Yala, Wasgamuwa, Minneria, and Giritale National Parks will be renovated under this project.
According to the Agrarian Services and Wildlife Minister S M Chandrasena, this project will reduce the number of wild animals migrating from the wild to villages, looking for water and food and this will also reduce the harm to the villages as well as the animals.
Under this project, instructions have also been given to grow grass strains to ensure animals have enough food supply during the drought.
This will secure both the wild animals and the humans by preventing them from straying into villages.
Some of the tanks have already been renovated while works on the others are in progress.
