Tact tiles to help visually handicapped

Tact tiles are being laid on the foot walks, on either side of Galle Road from Bambalapitiya Junction to Kollupitiya Junction, by the Colombo Municipal Council, for the benefit of the visually handicapped.

CMC Special Commissioner Omar Kamil told The Island that the foot walks and parking areas would be completed shortly. The project to re-develop that stretch of the Galle Road, which was launched in November 2010, had cost over Rs. 100 million. He said that the road surfacing had been completed and work on the corner at Kollupitiya would ‘take sometime’ due to the delay in getting the block stones. The work on the corner at Bambalapitiya had been completed, he said.

The Commissioner said that while the work at Kollupitiya junction was on, flow of traffic, too, had to be taken into consideration. He said it would take about four to five days to take a count of the traffic on the Galle Road and the Marine Drive near Methodist College before everything was finalised.

He said that the entire project would be completed before the end of April.
