March tourist arrivals up 43.5 %

 

The number of tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka went up 43.5 % to 75,130 in the month of March 2011, compared to March 2010 which was only 52,352, according to the latest figures released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority.

Figures showed an increase in the number of arrivals from Western Europe, South Asia, East Asia, Middle East and North America.

Tourists from Western Europe, the traditional tourist generating market, rose 37.6 percent to 30,003 in March 2011. The number of visitors from the UK went up 3.4 percent to 8,852, those from France up 105.4 percent to 5,899 and from Germany up 11.3 percent to 5,904.

South Asian visitors rose to 64.5 percent to 21,063 with tourists from India up by 58.2 percent to 13,619, from Maldives up 48.0 percent to 4,677 and from Pakistan up 237.7 percent to 2,067.

Arrivals from Australasia went up 50.8 percent to 3,540 and from East Asia up by 29.3 percent to 7,033. Japanese visitors increased 22.7 percent to 1,525, visitors from Malaysia rose 22.7 percent to 1,329.
