Lanka’s largest fisheries harbour soon

Construction work of the Sri Lanka’s largest fisheries harbor in Dickowita is nearing completion. The harbour which is being constructed at a cost of Rs.8500 Million is expected to be declared open within the next 6 months.

The new harbor will consist fuel stations, ice storage facilities, refrigerators, deep freezers and adequate anchorage.

The Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Ministry said that a special committee has been appointed to supply all required infrastructure facilities a harbour should have, in order to overcome the shortages.

The harbour premises comprise 8.1 hectares and the harbour basin is around 11.7 hectares. It was being constructed under a loan scheme provided by the government of the Netherlands.

The harbour will also consist of enough space for anchoring 515 fishing vessels. The entrance to the harbour would be expanded to 70 metres from the present length of 50 metres.

A fish canning factory and a fish market has also been constructed. Water tanks, an electricity generation plant and shopping mall would also be constructed at a cost of Rs.500 million.
