EPF Fund increased by 16.9 percent

 

The total value of the Employees’ Provident Fund managed by the Central Bank has grown by 16.9 percent in 2010 to Rs.899.7 billion from Rs.769.7 billion the previous year.

The number of member accounts increased by 3.9 percent during the year to 13.3 million from 12.8 million in 2009. Contributing member accounts reached 2.3 million by end-December, up 9.5 percent from 2.1 million a year ago.

Employers contributing to the fund grew 1 percent to 62,000 by end-December 2010 from 61,396 a year earlier. In monetary terms, contributions amounted to Rs.54.8 billion during the year, up 12.5 percent from Rs.48.7 billion in 2009.

The fund’s total liability to members has grown 15.5 percent to Rs.869.2 billion from Rs.752.5 billion a year earlier.

Total refunds to members and their legal heirs reached Rs.34.9 billion in 2010, up 9.4 percent from Rs.31.9 billion the previous year.

As at end 2010, the fund’s investment portfolio stood at Rs.867.1 billion, an increase by 17.5 billion from Rs.738.1 billion a year earlier with 94.1 percent of the fund invested in government securities. The fund has also provided Rupee loans to the government amounting to Rs.40.7 billion during the year.
