Tamil cultural sites to be named as World Heritage sites

 

The government is to take measures to get the recognition for the historical places that express the Tamil cultural identity as World Heritage sites.

Archaeologists have identified ancient jetties, ports, and temples etc. in Sri Lanka with significant Tamil cultural identity, the Minister of National Heritage Jagath Balasuriya said.

The Ministry is in the process of proposing them to the UNESCO to be named as World Heritage sites.

Star shaped Jaffna Dutch Fort that is being renovated now and Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil are two such places.

The Minister also said that the Archeological Department has planned to conserve and develop 25 historical places in the Northern and Eastern Provinces.
