Harper government in the lead

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has won a majority of seats in Parliament for the first time.

Harper’s Conservatives were ahead or leading in 166 districts, according to preliminary results from Elections Canada.

The Canadian government led by Prime Minister Harper government introduced a bill on October 21, 2010 to crack down on asylum-seekers who flee to Canada through the back door. The bill included longer jail terms for human smugglers, such as ten years for anyone moving 50 people or more.

In 2009 April, the Harper government said it would not remove LTTE from the banned terrorist organizations list in Canada despite LTTE supporters conducted a protest campaign in front of the Canadian Parliament demanding a ceasefire in Sri Lanka during the last days of humanitarian operation against the terrorist organization.

The Tamil Tigers are responsible for suicide bombings, and the deaths of tens of thousands of civilians in Sri Lanka, Canadian Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said.
In 2006, Canada banned the LTTE as a terrorist organization under the federal Anti-Terrorism Act.

Canada has banned the World Tamil Movement (WTM) and frozen its assets for raising funds for LTTE in 2008.
