Implementation of the Kalu Ganga Development Project, which is a part of the Morgahakanda and Kalu Ganga Development multi-faceted mega irrigation project has been accelerated with the assistance of the Saudi Development Fund.

This Rs.48, 950 million project is jointly funded by the government and foreign donors.

Under this project, a reservoir and Dam will be constructed across Amban Ganga at Elahera in the Matale District and another reservoir will be constructed at Pallegama across Kalu Ganga which is a tributary of the Amban Ganga.

The project will help increase the total cultivable land acreage by 3,000 hectares. Accordingly, the extent of cultivation in Maha and Yala seasons will be increased to 81,500 hectares and 68,500 hectares respectively.
