A team of fifteen Sri Lankan relief workers had left for Japan to help in relief operations in the areas affected by the recent earthquake and the subsequent tsunami in Japan.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA), the Sri Lankans were expected to reach Narita Airport in Tokyo, today.
The MOFA said that this team would help in debris clearance operations in Ishinomaki in the Miyagi prefecture for about two weeks starting from May 13, in collaboration with ‘Peace Boat’, a Non-Governmental Organization.
The Government of Sri Lanka had already offered to donate one million US dollars (approximately 80 million yen) and 3 million tea bags to the government of Japan.
“The Government of Japan reiterates its deep appreciation for the efforts of the Government of Sri Lanka”, the Foreign Ministry of Japan said in a statement.
