No place for ragging in campuses

Government’s duty to rid fear and doubt among students and parents - President

The time of admission of a student to university is among the most decisive in one’s life and should in no way be sullied by the practice of ragging that prevails today. It is the responsibility of the government to rid the fear and doubts that exist among students and parents at the time of university admission. This should not be achieved through to the suppression of another group or the use of oppressive laws, but rather by building the self-confidence of the new students, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

He made these observations at Temple Trees today when addressing the students selected for admission to universities, at the launch of the special programme for building of ‘Leadership Capabilities and Positive Thinking’ among them in a three week training course.

Nearly 30, 000 students who will be participating in this special training at 28 training centers throughout the country will be linked through satellite communication.

This training programme is a joint national effort of the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Defence. Following the three week training the new entrants will also follow courses in English language and Information Technology, lasting nearly three months.
