Committee appointed a to probe violence in FTZ

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday appointed a one-man committee to probe the violent incident in the Katunayake Free Trade Zone.

The retired Supreme Court judge Mahanama Thilakarathna is assigned to head the committee and submit a report on the incident within five days.

The committee is also empowered to make recommendations against authority, if there is any that overacted beyond the legal margins.

Police and the Free Trade Zone workers protesting the proposed pension scheme clashed in Katunayake yesterday. Fifteen police personnel including a Deputy Inspector General and more than 250 employees of the free trade zone were injured in the violence.
