Kokavil Multi Purpose Transmission Tower commissioned

The Kokavil Multi Purpose Transmission Tower was commissioned by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The 175-meter tower was constructed at a cost of Rs. 450 million under the 'Uthuru Wasanthaya' programme to develop the Northern Province.

The tower is to begin digital transmission covering the entire Northern Province of the island since today, Telecommunication Regulatory Commission said.

The LTTE terrorist captured the original tower and used to broadcast their clandestine transmissions before blowing it up in 2009 when Security forces were approaching.

The tower, which is Sri Lanka's first ever multi-channel broadcasting tower, will be allocated for the providers of services of high speed internet, radio, television, and telecommunications transmissions, as well as military communication operations.
